The Stampede / Big Spring est.
1954

The Stampede was built by Hoyle & Ben Nix in
1954 as a home base for Hoyle & His West Texas Cowboys. The Stampede serves no
alcohol. It is a BYOB & has always been a family place. When first opened, it had no tables, just benches
around the wall. There was a red line painted about 3/4th's of the way back on the dance floor. If you weren't
danicng, you stayed behind the line. In 1958, tables and chairs ere added.. It is not open every weekend as in
years past, but Jody Nix still plays here quite often.
The Stampede is a rustic builing with a beautiful murial painting of a calf
roper on the back wall of the bandstand. It was painted by the late Charlie Smith, a close friend
& former musician in the Nix band.
Top names from Bob Will & His Texas Playboys, Johnny Lee Wills & His
Boys to Asleep At The Wheel & Johnny Bush have played here. Often
referred to as "The Stomp," the Stampede remains a place where you will see fathers
dancing with daughters & granddaughters, moms dancing with sons & grandsons. Middle aged and seniors
have graced this graced this legendary Texas dance hall.
