Luckenbach Dance Hall / Fredericksburg
est. 1849

Grape Creek, later named after Carl Albert
Luckenbach was established as a community trading post and was one of the few that never broke a peace
treaty with the Comanche Indians whom they bartered and traded with. In 1849 a community hall was
built which is now known as the world famous Luckenbach Dance Hall. For generations, families came
to Luckenbach for reunions, weddings, Schuetzen fests (shooting contests) and
Sangerfests (German song fests.)
Hondo Couch, a local rancher and regional folk hero bought Luckenback in 1970 for
$30,000 after seeing an ad in the paper offering "town, population 3 for sale." Luckenbach consists of almost ten
acres. 1n 1973, Jerry Jeff Walker recorded "Viva Terlingua" in Luckenbach. In 1977,
Waylon Jennings immortalized Luckenbach with his hit "Luckenbach, Texas."
Today, Luckenbach is still a social center and without a doubt, Luckenbach Dance Hall
is one of the most unique and best dance halls in this great state of Texas.
