The building originated as Reed Grocery Warehouse. Kent Finlay purchased the structure
in 1974 and opened a music hall to develop and promote Texas music. Southwest Texas State University (now Texas
State University) student George Strait & the Ace In The Hole Band. played their first shows at the club in
1975. A young Stevie Ray Vaughn performed there every Tuesday night. Through the 1970's and 1980's, patrons heard
Ernest Tubb, Willie Nelson, Omar & the Howlers & also Lou Ann Barton. Other performers included Jerry Jeff
Walker, Alvin Crow, guitarist Eric Johnson & Asleep At The Wheel.
The club changed hands several times after Finlay sold it in 1988. In the early 1990's, it
hosted mainly Tejano bands before returning to country after Finlay bought it back in 1999.
Cheatham Street Warehouse features songwriter nights on Wednesdays. Professional and novice writers perform their
original compositions. In 2007, Kent Finlay was honered with the Coach Darrell K. Royal Texas Heritage Songwriter's
Patron Award from the Texas Heritage Songwriter's Association.
